Our ancestors understood that certain psychosomatic illnesses, such as trauma, stress and depression, were a kind of division of the self, a dichotomy. In fact, today, it is said that a depressed or traumatized person lost his spirit, that is, literally, his soul, a word that in Spanish comes from the ancient Latin anima. Therefore, when someone says that a person lost his spirit, he makes a reference similar to what our ancestors made.

The healers then perform a ceremony in which they call upon the soul of said person to return to unity with their physical body. This situation is called scare and refers to stress disorders, traumas that a person may have, fears and depression.

Susto, if we use the term as the ancestors know it, can refer to disorders due to trauma, stress, anxiety, which can lead to psychological, physical and spiritual damage in a person of any age. The event that causes the scare may have occurred in a distant time and the symptoms revealed recently or the patient may have lived with them for many years, getting used to an unhappy life, or they may be recent events. Having been in the middle of a war or violence, suffering from torture, having been a victim of sexual harassment or having survived an accident can cause serious disorders in a person. But also living a life of great stress, worrying about the social situation, worrying about loved ones, having suffered rejection and many other reasons, lead a person to depression. The person begins to have obsessive thoughts, does not make sense of anything and even thinks about ending his or her life.

A strong impression can cause disorders and also depends on the type of people. Children are more susceptible to acquiring susto than adults and each person, given their social and cultural circumstances and character, can acquire susto more easily than others.

Physical symptoms may include headaches, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and chills. Many times these people go to a doctor, who does not find any verifiable reason for the illness, which classifies it as a psychosomatic illness. Medical prescriptions, often for incorrect drugs, can end up worsening the situation.

A good healer is close to the patient and will try to understand the reason for the scare. The way in which he receives the patient is very important, because he must feel from the beginning that his problem has all the importance it deserves and that it is real, not a product of his imagination. Suggestion methods are part of the treatment and healers must be experts in this, knowing well the different rites and ways of healing according to their own cultural customs. This has to do with hypnosis, because the healer must call the spirit of said person to return.

The patient must provide the healer with some offerings, which must be cremated as a tribute to the angels. These offerings vary according to each culture, but in general they have to do with products from Mother Earth. In many towns, the cure for susto is done in a secret place and the people closest to the patient can go there. The preparation of the place is important, because the level of mysticism already contributes to the suggestion that the patient requires for healing.

Once the offering has been cremated, the healer speaks to the patient in an affectionate manner, makes him understand that everything will be fine and whispers in his ear, "Now you have to go back, look, your loved ones are waiting for you or other forms specific to each locality." .

The patient lies on a mat, stretcher or bed and then there are many methods for the ceremony. Incense, candles and natural perfumes must be present. One is to rub her entire body with bouquets of flowers or chosen plants while saying, either in Spanish or the local language, come back Luis, come back, your people are waiting for you.

After rubbing with the bouquet of flowers or herbs, some people use the chicken egg to make a new rub, with the idea that the egg collects bad energies from the body. These elements used in the ritual must be returned to Mother Nature.

Other methods include baths with medicinal plants and in extreme cases, psychotropic plants such as yagé, yopo and many others that are well known to healers and taitas can be used.
